Location Lamon Bay is a large bay roughly 100 miles south of Manila on the east coast of southern Luzon in the Philippines and Alabat Islands. Borders Quezon Province including the coastal towns of Atimonan, Gumaca, Plaridel, Lopez, Calauag and the western edge of Camarines Norte Province. Beyond to the south is Tayabas Bay. Wartime History On December 24, 1941 at 1:30am a Japanese invasion force drops anchor in Lamon Bay and an hour later were ready to land the Japanese Army 16th Division (less 9th Infantry and 33d Infantry) plus supporting units under the command of Lt. Gen. Susumu Morioka at three locations: Mauban, Siain (Plaridel) and Atimonan. The landing was covered by seaplanes from Mizuho. This was a secondary effort after the Japanese landing at Lingayen Gulf and would allow the Japanese to advance toward Manila from another direction. Their original objective was Batangas Bay but switched to less ideal Lamon Bay that had prevailing winds in December and was further from Manila.
