Location Kalai is located on the southern coast of New Britain on western side of Henry Reid Harbor inside Wide Bay. To the north is Brown Island and the Melkong River. Connected by a coastal track. To the southeast is Cape Turner. Possibly, also spelled "Kasalai". Prewar Kalai Plantation was planted with coconut palms for copra. Also, Kalai Roman Catholic Mission with a brother in residence was established at Kalai. Wartime History Australian soldiers from "Lark Force" retreating southward from Rabaul. During late January 1942 until February 1942 Australian soldiers from "Lark Force" retreating from Rabaul overnighted at Kalai Plantation and were looked after and fed by the Roman Catholic Brother in charge of the mission. By early February 1942 occupied by the Japanese. During the Pacific War, the Japanese used the plantation buildings and wharf while the shore area was used by landing barges. Between the middle of 1944 until February 1945, attacked by Allied aircraft targeting the wharf and barges. By early February 1945 the Japanese withdrew from the Kalai Plantation area. Allied missions against Kalai June 11, 1944–February 15, 1945 On February 15, 1945 Australian Army field artillery from the 2/14th Field Regiment fired on Kalai Plantation ahead of advancing troops from the 14th Battalion and 32nd Battalion that occupied Kalai and found the Japanese had withdrawn from the area.
