Location Mount Kombiu (Mt. Kombiu) is located on on the Gazelle Peninsula of New Britain. Also spelled Mount Kambiu or Mt. Kambiu. Known locally simply as "Mother". Between 1884–1914 part of Deutsch Neu Guinea (German New Guinea) until September 1914 at the start of World War I. Postwar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in East New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). To the east is Rabalanakaia and beyond Rabaul and Simpson Harbor. To the southeast is South Daughter (Turangunan). To the south is Tavurvur (Mount Tavurvur, Matupi Volcano). To the northwest is North Daughter (Tovanumbatir). Borders Saint George's Channel to the east. Wartime History During the Pacific War, several aircraft crashed into Mother volcano.
