Location Lat 8° 10' 11S Long 146° 11' 40E Terapo is located rougly ten miles inland from the the Gulf of Papua on the southern coast of New Guinea. To the south is the Lakekamu River. Roughly 200 miles to the southeast is Port Moresby. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of Papua. Today located in the Kerema District of Gulf Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar The Terapo Mission was established at this location. Terapo Airfield Built by the Allies as an emergency airfield C-47 Dakota Serial Number 42-23700 Number 233 Pilot Walker crashed August 10, 1943 P-38H Lightning Serial Number ? Pilot 2nd Lt. Allan B. Camp crashed August 20, 1943 remains recovered P-39Q Airacobra Serial Number 42-19987 Pilot Pitonyak crashed October 28, 1943 one of three aircraft lost to weather near Terapo References Working in Papua New Guinea 1931-1946 (1983) page 303 "[early 1942]...we arrived at Terapo, a French Catholic Mission where we were welcomed by four European Fathers and taken to our quarters - comfortable thached bush buildings.
