Location
Sea Horse is located near the north coast of Guadalcanal. To the west is The Gifu and further to the west is the Galloping Horse area near Mount Austen. Nicknamed "Sea Horse'" due to the area's grass covered hill spine that from the air resembled a seahorse shape. The feature is comprised of Hill 43 at the southern end (the head of the seahorse), and Hill 44 at the northern edge (the tail of the seahorse). The U.S. Army spells the nickname "Sea Horse" (two words). Also spelled Seahores (one word) in some sources.

Wartime History
On January 8, 1943 the Battle of Seahorse began when the U.S. Army 35th Infantry Regiment "Cacti" commanded by Colonel Robert B. McClure attacked the Japanese defending this terrain feature. The 3d Battalion commanded by Lt. Col. William J. Mullen, Jr., was to advance from Hill 27 southwest then swing northward to attack Hill 43 and Hill 44 from the south. Following in reserve a half day's march behind was 1st Battalion under the command of Lt. Col. James B. Leer.

On January 10, 1943 a total of nine Americans were killed including Pvt Martin P. Odenthal (KIA). During the day's combat, Sgt William G. Fournier (KIA) and T/5 Lewis R. Hall (KIA) rushed to man an idle machine gun until both were killed. Later, they earned the Medal of Honor, posthumously. On January 11, 1943 the battle ended with the Japanese defeated and the Americans advancing westward toward Galloping Horse.
