Location Lake Tegano is located at the eastern end of Rennell Island, this bay is 18 miles long, 6.2 miles wide with an area of 60 square miles, 17% of the island's total area. Locals refer to the lake as Tegano, Te Nggano or Tungano meaning "Big Water". Also known as Lavimala Bay. Previously, Rennell and Bellona were part of Central Province. Since 1993, part of Rennell and Bellona Province in the Solomon Islands. Wartime History On November 12, 1942 a detachment from the 2nd Marines sent from New Hebrides established a lookout post at this location. Afterwards, the U.S. Navy used this lake as a staging area and divert station until 1943. On June 13, 1944 at 9:32am a JRF-3 Goose from Henderson Field landed on the lake with a group of Americans including Captain Drain and Charles A. Lindbergh who traded with locals then departed at 1:04pm on a flight back to Guadalcanal. SBD-3 Dauntless 03293 Pilot Iden ditched September 20, 1942 SBD-3 Dauntless 03294 Pilot Zuber ditched September 20, 1942 PBY-5 Catalina 08253 Damaged October 15, 1943 and abandoned afterwards References The Wartime Journals of Charles A.
