    Aoba Island (Ambae) Penama Province Republic of Vanuatu (New Hebrides)

Location
Lat 15°24′0″S Long 167°50′0″E Aoba Island is located at the center of Penama Province in Vanuatu (Republic of Vanuatu, New Hebrides). At the center of the island is the peak of Lombenben a volcanic mountain. Also known as Ambae Island or Leper's Island. To the west is Espiritu Santo Island.

Wartime History
During the Pacific War, American author James Michener who served in World War II on Espiritu Santo was inspired by Aoba Island as the basis for the fictional island of Bali Ha'i in his novel Tales of the South Pacific. The name "Bali Ha'i" was derived from a village on Mono Island in Solomon Islands.
