Wartime History Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 2 Mark 1 Model 2 Radar mounted on a trailer. This radar set had an aerial search range between 31-93 miles / 50-150km. During early 1943 transport to Shortland Harbor and emplaced on a hilltop on Poporang Island. Emplaced nearby was Type 2 Mark 1 Model 2 (No. 1). These two radars operated to provide an early warning system for incoming aircraft approaching the Shortland Islands area. On April 18, 1943 this radar was not operational during the Yamamoto Mission "Operation Peacock" because an earlier air raid damaged a generator, leaving both radars without power and not operative that day. Wreckage This radar remains on the island. The instruments are broken and porcine post broken. Overgrown, it does not rotate. Appears to have been emplaced in a partial earthen revetment.
