The Silent Wings Museum opened on October 19, 2002 at Lubbock Airport inside the old terminal building and was opened in conjunction with annual reunion of the National WWII Glider Pilot Association. The museum preserves and promotes the history of the World War II military glider program and includes a collection of over 9,000 items donated by World War II veterans of the National WWII Glider Pilot Association. The museum includes displays on World War II glider operations including during the Pacific War. The first: March 1944 "Operation Thursday" use of gliders by the Chindits and 1st Air Commando Group in Burma. The second: June 23, 1945 glider landing by the 11th Airborne Division (11th Airborne), 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment (511th PIR) at Aparri on Luzon in the Philippines. The third: June 28, 1945 rescue from Balim Valley (Shangri-La) in western New Guinea.
