The Thin Red Line Novel and Hollywood Movies Author James Jones was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division (25th ID) "Tropical Lightning", 27th Infantry Regiment "Wolfhounds" on Guadalcanal. During January 1943, he participated in the battle at Galloping Horse and Hill 53 near Mount Austen on Guadalcanal. His novel, The Thin Red Line was first published in 1962 and became a classic of war literature and was adapted into two Hollywood movies: Thin Red Line (1964) directed by Andrew Marton and Thin Red Line (1998) directed by Terrence Malick.
