Ship History Built by at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries shipyard in Kobe. Laid down May 5, 1915 as the lead ship of the Ise class battleship as an improved version of the prior Fusō class battleship. Launched November 12, 1916 as Ise named for Ise Prefecture. Completed December 15, 1917 and commissioned in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) under the command of Captain Akizawa Yoshima assigned to 1st Division of the 1st Fleet. On November 20, 1919 assigned to Captain Furukawa Hiroshi. On August 29, 1920 departs on her first patrol off Siberia during Japan's Siberian Intervention against the Red Army. On November 20, 1921 assigned to Captain Yokoo Hisashi. On December 1, 1921 assigned to Captain Nagasawa Naotaro. PARTIAL HISTORY Sinking History On July 28, 1945 in Kure Harbor at the northern end of Mitsukojima (Mitsugojima) off Kure. Ise was targeted by U.S. Navy (USN) carrier planes from Task Force 38 (TF 38). During the attack, F4U Corsairs from USS Hancock Air Group 6 score five hits with 1,000 pound bombs. Later, hit by eleven more bombs and near misses from other carrier planes. At 2:00pm a formation of eighteen B-24 bomb Ise but fail to score any hits. Ise takes on a 15° list to starboard and sinks in shallow water at roughly Lat 34° 15N Long 132° 31E. At 6:00pm attempts to salvage the battleship are abandoned. On November 20, 1945 officially removed from the Navy list. Shipwreck Ise settled into shallow water in Kure Harbor with the deck and superstructure above the surface. Afterwards some of her AA guns are removed and installed in nearby shore batteries to defend Kure Harbor until the end of the Pacific War. On November 26, 1945 inspected by U.S. Navy (USN) NavTech mission technicians. On October 9, 1946 the shipwreck was broken up for scrap metal in situ by the Japanese.
