Ship History Built by Kawasaki Shipyards in Kobe. Laid down August 4, 1922 as Sendai-class light cruiser. Launched December 8, 1923 as Jintsū named for the Jintsū River in Japan. Also spelled Jintsu in English sources. Commissioned July 31, 1925 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) under the command of Captain Fukushima Kanzo attached to Kure Naval District. On December 1, 1925 placed under the command of Captain Yamauchi Toyonaka. PARTIAL LIST On July 12, 1943 at 5:30pm departs Rabaul with Rear Admiral Shunji Izaki embarked escorted by destroyers Mikazuki, Yukikaze, Hamakaze, Kiyonami and Yūgure plus destroyer transports Satsuki, Minazuki, Yūnagi, and Matsukaze each with personnel and cargo bound for Vila on Kolombangara where the destroyer transports will unload. Sinking History On July 13, 1943 after 1:00am at the start of the Battle of Kolombangara (Second Battle of Kula Gulf) Jintsū was engaged by USS Nicholas (DD-449) and switched on her searchlights but was targeted by Allied light cruisers that fired 2,630 shells with fire correction from spotting aircraft and caused heavy damage. At 1:17am the light cruiser lost steering and came to stop and hit by several torpedoes and sank at 1:45am with the loss of 482 crew sinking into the center of "The Slot" between Kolombangara Island and Choiseul Island at roughly Lat 07°38′S Long 157°06′E. Aboard, 482 crew were lost including Rear Admiral Shunji Izaki. sunk by cruiser gunfire and a destroyer torpedo at roughly Lat 07°38′S Long 157°06′E. A total of 482 were lost with the cruiser. Shipwreck On April 26, 2019 the shipwreck of Jintsū was located by R/V Petrel at the mouth of Kula Gulf at a depth of 2,952' / 900m with her bow laying on its port side and the stern section upright.
