Ship History
Built by American Bridge Company, Ambridge, PA. Laid down September 6, 1944 as LST-542 Class Tank Landing Ship. Launched 25 October 1944 as USS LST-835 sponsored by Mrs. I. Raphael. Commissioned November 20, 1944 i the U.S. Navy (USN) with Lt. William H. McHenry, USNR in command and underwent a shakedown cruise then to New Orleans to load ammunition.

Wartime History
Assigned to LST Division One Hundred Thirty-Four, LST Group Sixty-Seven, LST Flotilla Twenty-Three. On December 28, 1944 departs New Orleans via the Panama Canal and the west coast of the United States then departs across the Pacific via Pearl Harbor On March 18, 1945 arrives Guam and embarks personnel, equipment and cargo and departs for Iwo Jima to unload then returns to the Marianas. On April 25, 1945 departs Saipan with ammunition bound for Okinawa.

Postwar
On October 29, 1945 assigned to the Occupation service in the Far East and operates in the Philippines and Japan. On November 8, 1945 stopped for cargo at Saipan then crossed the Pacific bound for the United States. On January 8, 1946 arrived San Francisco and later in the month departed for Astoria and was decommissioned and became part of the Columbia River Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet.

On July 1, 1955 renamed USS Hillsdale County (LST-835). During October 1959 struck from the Naval Vessel Register. In April 1961 sold to Japan for service in the Japanese Self-Defense Force (JSDF) and renamed JDS Shimokita (LST-4002).

Later, resold to the Philippines for service in the Philippine Navy as BRP Cavite (LT-509) named for Cavite and remained in use until the late 1980s.

Fate
During 1989 broken up for scrap.

Awards
LST-821 earned one battle start for her World War II service.
