On October 10, 1942 arrives Cold Bay and performs a reconassiance then departs and five days later returns to Kiska. On October 17, 1942 after a U.S. air raid that sinks destroyer Oboro north of Kiska, RO-65 is sent to rescue her crew and is on standby to rescue the crew of damaged destroyer Hatsuharu. On October 19, 1942 departs the patrol area and two days later is directed to perform a recoanassiance of Attu. On October 23, 1942 conducts a reconaissance of Holz Bay off Attu. Sinking History On November 3, 1942 in Kiska Harbor off Kiska when an alarm is sounded for a U.S. air raid commences by B-24 Liberators and immediately crash dives but her conning town hatch and main induction valve still open and begins flooding with her stern rising to a 30° downward angle and sinks at sinks at Lat 51-58N, Long 177-33E. Aboard, 17 sailors and two crew drown. A total of 45 sailors escape using the forward torpedo tubes. Officially, removed from the Navy list on August 1, 1943. Shipwreck The shipwreck of this submarine sunk facing eastward towards the mouth of Kiska Harbor. The side of the hull has structural damage to the pressure hull material from the sail is laying off to the side plus a debris field to the south. The dive planes are in the horizontal position, not pointed downward if conducting a dive when sunk. The propeller was fouled with cable, perhaps from later salvage attempts. The submersible deck gear was in place with the forward torpedo loading hatch is open with a 21" torpedo in place on the port side. After the sinking, salvage divers or SCUBA diver have opened hatches and attempted to salvage material off the submarine. It is not clear when this salvage was done or by whom either Japanese, Americans or souvenir hunting SCUBA divers. During September 1989 salvage divers from USS Safeguard (ARS-50) surveyed the submarine. References Other sources state RO-65 was sunk September 26, 1942 or September 28, 1942 possibly confusing with RO-67 damaged that day. Other sources state the cause of loss was because the submarine ran aground. Officially, the U.S. Navy lists the loss as floundered (while submerged) during USAAF air attack.
