Background
On December 22, 1939 constituted as the 36th Bombardment Squadron (36th BS) in the U.S. Air Corps (USAAC). On June 20, 1941 became the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). On February 1, 1940 activated at March Field in the 28th Composite Group (28th CG) equipped with the B-18 Bolo.

Wartime History
On February 9, 1942 transfers from Elmendorf Field to Kodiak Airfield (Fort Greeley).

On January 21, 1943 aerial collision between B-17E 41-2586 pilot Major H. McWilliams (MIA) and B-17E 41-9094 sustained tail damage between Umnak Island and Adak Island but returned safely.

On May 4, 1943 transfers to Amchitka Airfield.

On September 30, 1943 moves to McChord Field. During October 1943 deploys to the European Theater of Operations (ETO) to the United Kingdom. On November 6, 1943 arrives Alconbdry Airfield in England.

PARTIAL HISTORY

On December 14, 1945 moves to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. On December 15, 1945 inactivated.
