Background
The 417th Bombardment Group "Sky Lancers" (417th BG) was assigned to the 5th Air Force in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) included the 672nd Bombardment Squadron "Tomahawks" (672nd BS), 673rd Bombardment Squadron "Flying Cowboys" (673rd BS), 674th Bombardment Squadron "Wolf Pack" (674th BS) and 675th Bombardment Squadron "Dauntless Demons" (675th BS).
During late 1943, the 417th BG deployed overseas and arrived in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) in late January 1944.
The 417th BG operated A-20 Havoc on low level strike missions in New Guinea and later the Philippines. Also, some B-25 Mitchell and C-47 Skytrain aircraft were assigned for transport. On March 27, 1944 the group flew its first combat mission. The 417th BG remained in combat until the end of the Pacific War.
