Background
On October 20, 1939 constituted and activated in the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) assigned to the 7th Bombardment Group (7th BG) at Hamilton Field. On September 7, 1940 moves to Fort Douglas in Utah operating the B-17 Flying Fortress. On June 20, 1941 became part of the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). On June 21, 1941 moves to Salt Lake City. On November 13, 1941 the ground echelon begins a movement overseas to Australia and.
Wartime History
On December 8, 1941 at the start of the Pacific War the air echelon moves to Muroc Field to fly anti-submarine patrols off California for several days. On December 22, 1941 the ground echelon in arrives Brisbane On December 18, 1941 moves to Hickam Field.
On January 5, 1942 departs across the Pacific on a ferry flight bound for Australia then to the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). On January 19, 1942 arrives Yogyakarta Airfield on Java and begins flying bombing missions during the Java campaign.
On January 22, 1942 during take off from Palembang I Airfield (P1) on Sumatra damaged and written off is B-17E 41-2419 pilot

On February 14, 1942 a detachement under U.S. Navy (USN) control operates from Nandi Airfield on Fiji for four days.
On February 20, 1942 a detachement under U.S. Navy (USN) control operates from Garbutt Field at Townsville until March 14, 1942.
In early March 1942 the squadron withdraws from Java back to Australia. On March 4, 1942 moves to Melbourne.
On April 26, 1942 the squadron transfered without personnel to Columbia Army Air Field in South Carolina and econstituted equipped with the B-25 Mitchell attached to the 17th Bombardment Group (17th BG) for training. On May 28, 1942 returned to the 7th Bombardment Group (7th BG) and begins a movement overseas to India.
On July 23, 1942 arrives Karachi Airfield in India (Pakistan).
On September 15, 1942 redesignated 22nd Bombardment Squadron (Medium) and assigned to the 341st Bombardment Group (341st BG).
On December 3, 1942 moves to Chakulia Airifeld in India.
On January 8, 1944 moves to Yangkai Airfield in China.
On April 29, 1944 a detachment operates from Yunnami Airfield until May 6, 1944 then returns to
Yangkai Airfield.
On November 5, 1944 a
detachment operates from Peishiyi Airfield until March 25, 1945 then returns to
Yangkai Airfield.
On March 29, 1945 a
detachment operates from Chihkiang Airfield until April 1, 1945 then returns to Yangkai Airfield.
Postwar
On November 2, 1945 inactivated at Camp Kilmer in New Jersey.
