Tobera
Airfield
This fighter airstrip operated primarily
Zero fighters. Today, it is a copra and coconut plantation. The
runway and taxiways are still used.
Repair Tractor
Chevrolet built tractor used by the Japanese to pull dirt carts
used to repair bomb craters on the runway.
Bomb
Damage & Munitions
Allied bombers and fighters
dropped tons of bombs onto the airfield and adjacent areas. These are two exploded
metal casings from what appears to be a 250 and 5000 lbs bombs. The whole area
is pot marked with craters, and sometimes unexploded weapons are discovered.
Aircraft Wreckage
This is the cockpit area and part of the instrument
panel of a Betty bomber. Tobera was primarily a fighter base,
but obviously there must have been some other aircraft and bombers
occasionally based here, or that crash landed in the area. Pieces
of aircraft and guns have been collected from the area.
Reclaiming of the Airfield
Comparison study of regrowth over the airfield from aerial photograph.
This amazing chronology shows how the airfield was literally swallowed
up by jungle regrowth.
