Mission History
On September 11, 1943 took of from Attu Airfield (APO 729) on Attu Island piloted by Major Frank T. Gash leading a bombing mission against the Kashiwabara staging area on the northeast tip of Paramushiru island in the Kurle Islands. Weather was ceiling and visibility unlimited (CAVU).

Over the target, the formation made a south to north bombing run from 18,600'. After releasing their bombs, the formation turned to the south and departed over Arahata Cape and descended. Five minutes after the bombing run at 8,000', the bombers were intercepted by Japanese fighters. This B-24 was shot in the no. 1 engine and caused the bomber to begin loosing speed.

Damaged, the rest of the formation escorted this bomber to sea level, but enemy fighters concentrated on this B-24 and knocked out the no. 3 engine and the tail gunner was observed to still be firing even after the bomber crashed into the sea. The B-24 crashed at approximately fifty miles east of Arahata Cape on Paramushiru island and was observed by two crew members aboard another bomber.

During the crash, the nose was observed to cave in, the fuselage buckled at the bomb bay and both wings broke off. The enemy fighters were observed to strafe the wreckage after the crash. When this B-24 failed to arrive the crew was officially declared Missing In Action (MIA).
