Aircraft History Built by Kawanishi. This flying boat was a pre-production experimental 13-shi Large flying boat. At the factory, painted with green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 2 Flying Boat / H8K1 Emily manufacture number unknown. Wartime History Assigned to Yokohama Kōkūtai (Yokohama Air Group). Tail code Y-71 in white. On March 3, 1942 took off piloted by Lt. Hisao Hashizume as one of three pilots with a total of ten crew with H8K1 Emily Tail Y-72 pilot Ensign Shosuke Sasao from off Emiej Island Seaplane Base in Jaluit Atoll on Operation K-1 an overnight reconnaissance and bombing mission over Pearl Harbor on Oahu. Each flying boat was armed with four 250kg bombs. This plane was no. 1 leading the pair. On March 4, 1942 over the target, due to clouds and blackout conditions on Oahu they were unable to find the target. At 2:10am this flying boat drops all four 250kg bombs that exploded near Roosevelt High School on the southern slope of Mount Tantalus (Tantalus, Puʻu ʻōhiʻa) damaging trees and blew out windows in the vicinity. At 2:30am the second H8K1 Emily (No. 2) pilot Ensign Shosuke Sasao released his bombs over the ocean and cause no damage. Afterwards, both flying boats returned safely. Supporting, Japanese submarine I-9 took up station halfway between Wotje and French Frigate Shoals to act as a radio beacon for the Emilys. I-19, I-15 and I-26 are to refuel the flying boats at the French Frigate Shoals. I-23 stood by ten miles south of Pearl Harbor to provide weather reports and act in an air-sea rescue capacity.
