Pitt (injured) Passenger Lt Frank C. Hinders (injured) Crashed November 23, 1941 Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 1882. No U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) serial number was assigned. Disassembled and loaded as cargo aboard SS Kaituna and shipped from the United States across the Pacific to Sydney. Wartime History On March 9, 1940 assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as Hudson Mark I serial number A16-31. The same day assigned to 2 Air Depot (2 AD) and reassembled. On April 4, 1940 assigned to No. 14 Squadron. On May 15, 1940 suffered a landing accident. On July 20, 1940 approved for conversion to components but instead placed into a hanger at Pearce Airfield until at least September 20, 1940. Although written off, a decision was made to ship the bomber as cargo aboard a ship bound for Sydney where it was transported to Clyde Engineering and was the first Hudson repaired in Australia completed by June 6, 1941. Next, assigned to No. 24 Squadron with code U 07/41. On November 21, 1941 took off from Garbutt Field piloted by F/Lt Paul P. Paterson with co-pilot P/O James S. McIntyre on a flight via 7 Mile Drome near Port Moresby to refuel then onward to Kavieng then to the final destination Lakunai Airfield near Rabaul. Mission History On November 23, 1941 took off from Lakunai Airfield piloted by F/Lt Paul P. Paterson with co-pilot P/O James S. McIntyre and climbed to roughly 100' then crashed bounching on the nose and belly then spun around then caught fire and burned. Aboard, three were injured including McIntyre who was burned. Both Pitt and Hinders suffered abrasions and contusions. and Hinders Hinders. Afterwards, stripped for usable parts and abandoned.
