Aircraft History
Built by Mitsubishi. Delivered to the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as Type 97 Heavy Bomber / Ki-21 Sally manufacture number unknown (four digits).

Wartime History
Assigned to an unknown Hiko Sentai (Flying Regiment). No known markings or tail code. This Sally likely flew bombing missions against Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. Later, assigned to the 3rd Kokugun (3rd Air Army) with a tail motif with a red circle with a kanji inside on the upper tail. The rear fuselage had a vertical white stripe. This bomber survived intact until the end of the Pacific War.

During late August 1945 or early September 1945 painted in accordance with the terms of surrender with green crosses over the Hinomaru (Rising Sun) and retained the rear fuselage vertical stripe.

On September 10, 1945 this aircraft and Ki-54 Hickory flew a Japanese surrender delegation to Labuan Airfield to surrender to the Australian Army. After landing, the Japanese led by Lieutenant General Masao Baba Commander of the Japanese 37th Army and Supreme Commander of Japanese forces in Borneo and his staff surrendered to Australian Army Major General Wootten.

Nicknamed "Tokyo Rose" by the Australians with the nickname painted on the left side of the nose in a cursive style. Afterwards, used to transport Japanese Prisoners Of War (POWs) for the war crimes trials and often flown between Labuan Airfield and other locations on Borneo. On October 20, 1945 photographed parked at Labuan Airfield.

During February 1946, took off from Labuan Airfield pilot F/Lt M. Baker and an Australian crew and was flown to Laverton Field as a war prize. Afterwards, flown to Fairbairn Airfield and stored in a hanger. Sometime after 1955 this aircraft was scrapped.
