Aircraft History Built by Kawasaki. Delivered to the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as Type 2 Two-Seat Fighter / Ki-45 Kai Hai Toryu (Nick) manufacture number unknown. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Hiko Sentai (Flying Regiment) in Japan. In early September 1945 surrendered to American occupation forces. Transported to the United States for technical evaluation and flight testing by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). Later, disassembled and the fuselage placed into storage. The engines and wings were either lost or scrapped. Display During 1946, the fuselage was donated by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) to the Smithsonian Institution. The fuselage was placed into storage at NASM Paul E. Garber Facility. During late 2003 placed on display at NASM Udvar-Hazy Center atop a frame to support the fuselage. NASM inventory number A19600334000. The NASM collection includes parts of this aircraft including fairings, A19600334012, cockpit cushions, A19600334013, Indicator, Fuel Quantity, A19602874000, instrument panel, A19602812000 plus two radial engines: Ha 31, A19601984001 and Ha 33, A19670089000 that were both used by the Ki-45c Kai Hai model.
