Location Lat 1° 8' 60N Long 124° 49' 60E Langoan Airfield was located to the northeast of Langoan (Langowan) on the northeast of Celebes Island (Sulawesi). Also known as Menado II or Langowan Airfield. To the east is Kalkas (Kakas) and beyond Lake Tondano. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in North Maluku Province in Indonesia. Today located in Minahasa Regency in North Sulawesi Province (Sulawesi Utara) in Indonesia. Construction Built prewar by the Dutch as a single runway oriented roughly northeast to southwest. Wartime History During January 1942, the area between Kalkas (Kakas) to Langoan was defended by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) "Tactical Command Kakas" under the command of Captain W. C. van den Berg. Langoan Airfield was defended by the 41 brigade with 15-18 men each under the command of 1st Lieutenant J. G. Wielinga and reinforced by overvalwagens (armored cars) commanded by Sergeant-Major H. J. Robbemond. On January 11, 1942 Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) paratroopers from the the 1st Yokosuka Special Naval Landing Force (1st Yokosuka SNLF) aboard transports took off from Davao Airfield and were flown southward over Langoan. At 9:00am the 1st drop group including the 1st company jumped over Langoan with the objective to capture Langoan Airfield. Meanwhile the 2nd company jumped nearby with the objective to capture Kalkas (Kakas). On January 12, 1942 the 2nd drop group including the 3rd company jumped over Langoan Airfield as reinforcements. During the battle, the paratroopers managed to capture Langoan Airfield but suffered heavy casualties. The remaining Dutch including Captain van den Berg withdrew inland to initiate guerrilla warfare. A large number of Dutch surrendered and became Prisoners Of War (POW) while others including Captain van den Berg withdrew inland to mount a guerrilla warfare campaign. Many of the POWs were executed by the Japanese as retribution for the casualties they suffered at Langoan Airfield. Soon afterwards, Japanese planes began operating from Langoan Airfield. Starting on January 17, 1942 attacked by U.S. aircraft during the Java campaign then bombing raids resumed in early September 1944 until June 28, 1945.
