Location Lat 1° 13' 0" S Long 116° 58' 0" E Manggar Airfield was located at Manggar on the eastern coast of Borneo. Also known as Mangar Airfield or Manggarbesar Airfield. To the southwest is the Manggar River and offshore is Makassar Strait. To the west are Balikapan and Sepiinggang. Wartime History During the Pacific War, used by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) and Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) to defend the Balikpapan area. Starting in late 1944 attacked by American bomber and later escorting fighters until July 1945. Japanese units in Balikpapan Area 381 Kokutai, Hikotai 602 March-April, 1944 American missions against Manggar October 10, 1944–July 9, 1945 During July 1945 liberated by the Australian Army. Several Japanese aircraft were captured in the area including aircraft from both the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) and Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF). Wreckage included J1N1 Irving. Ki-51 Sonia Manufacture Number 2660 Tail 9311 Possibly of 7th Air Division HQ. Weave-line camo pattern Ki-84 Frank Manufacture Number 525 Possibly of 7th Air Division HQ. Weave-line camo pattern Ki-48 Lily Manufacture Number 2520 Center section burned out. G4M1 Betty Manufacture Number 334 Broken wreckage In early July 1945, Mangar Airfield was repaired and used by the Allies. Allied units based at Mangar No. 18 Squadron (B-25D) Batchelor arrives July 17, 1945 Today The former airfield area is abandoned and land redeveloped into an urban area.
