    Battle off Samar (Battle of Samar)  Philippines
Location
The Battle off Samar off Samar Island in the Philippines was one of the actions during the Battle for Leyte Gulf. The combatants were Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) versus U.S. Navy (USN) plus carrier aircraft. Also known as simply "Battle of Samar" or "The Battle of Samar".

Wartime History
During the night of October 24, 1944 the Japanese Force "A" (Central Force) under Kurita made a night passage through San Bernardino Strait. On October 25, 1944 shortly after dawn the Japanese warships opened fire on Task Group 77.4 (TG 77.4). During the battle, USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73) plus destroyers USS Hoel (DD-533), USS Johnston (DD-557) and USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) were sunk by Japanese gunfire. Three Japanese heavy cruisers were sunk by carrier aircraft.
