SOUTH PACIFIC (Thirteenth Air Force): Five B-24 snoopers attack a convoy in the northern
Solomon Islands and claim several damaging hits and the convoy reverses course.
SOUTHWEST PACIFIC (Fifth Air Force): The Wewak area is again
hit, the 40 attacking B-24's being escorted by 29 P-38's which claim 8 fighters
shot down; A-20's and RAAF Vengeances attack the Finschhafen and Lae area; B-24's
and P-39's hit a road near Bogadjim. The 21st Troop Carrier Squadron, 374th
Troop Carrier Group transfers from Port Moresby to Archerfield with C-47's. The 39th Troop
Carrier Squadron, 317th Troop Carrier Group, transfers from Archerfield to Port Moresby with C-47s.
USN: USS Grouper (SS-214) delivers forty-three personnel and 3,000 pounds of cargo on New Britain to support coastwatcher Malcolm Wright and rescues Captain Arthur L. Post.
USS Cisco (SS-290) is sunk, probably by Japanese planes from 954 Kokutai and gunboat Karatsu (ex-U.S. river gunboat Luzon (PR-7) in Sulu Sea, off Panay Island, 09°47'N, 121°44'E.
USS Gudgeon (SS-212) sinks Japanese merchant cargo ship Taian Maru, 15°22'N, 145°38'E. Minelayer No.2 Fumi Maru (which Gudgeon had engaged on 16 September 1943), counterattacks, but does not damage the submarine as Gudgeon and No.2 Fumi Maru encounter each other for the second time.
Japanese minelayer Hoko is sunk by aircraft off New Britain.
IJA: After dark, Japanese personnel begin withdrawing from Kolombangara.
