Location
Makō 馬公市 (Makung, Magong, Makeng) is located on Makung Island (P'eng-Hu Tao, Bokō To) the largest island in the Pescadores Islands (Penghu Islands). Known as Makeng 媽宮 in Chinese meaning mother's palace. In 1920, administered by Japan as a colony and renamed Makō 馬公 in the Makō Guard District of Formosa. Also spelled Mako in English sources. Postwar, spelled Makung and became part of the Republic of China (ROC) and is now part of Penghu County in the Southern Taiwan Region of Taiwan. Today, People's Republic of China (PRC) refers to the area as Taiwan Province, Taiwan Region or the Taiwan Area but has never administered it.
Wartime History
Prewar, developted by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) into an anchorage and base area to support warships and transports. On December 7, 1941 at the start of the Pacific War, the Japanese Navy invasion force with the Japanese Army "Kanno Detachment" departs Makō bound for Vigan on Luzon in the Philippines.
