Location
Makung Island is part of the Penghu Islands (Pescadores Islands) in the Taiwan Strait, approximately 31 miles west of Formosa (Taiwan). The islands includes Makung (Mako) on the western edge. In 1920, administered by Japan as a colony and renamed Bokō To in the Makō Guard District of Formosa. Postwar, returned to the original name Makung and became part of the Republic of China (ROC) and is now part of Penghu County in the Southern Taiwan Region of Taiwan. Today, People's Republic of China (PRC) refers to the area as Taiwan Province, Taiwan Region or the Taiwan Area but has never administered it.
