| Location Penghu Islands (Pescadores Islands) is an archipelago of 90 islands and islets in the Taiwan Strait (Formosa Strait) approximately 31 miles west of Formosa (Taiwan). The islands include the largest Magong Island (P'eng-Hu Tao, Bokō To), Yu-Weng Tao (Gyoō To). Borders the Formosa Strait (Taiwan Strait) to the west and Pescadores Channel (Penghu Channel) to the west and 31 miles beyond is the west coast of Formosa (Taiwan). In 1920, administered by Japan as a colony known as Hoko Retto. Also known as the Rover Islands Group or Rover Islands. Postwar, spelled Makung and became part of the Republic of China (ROC). Today, part of Penghu County in the Southern Taiwan Region of Taiwan. China refers to the island as Taiwan Province, Taiwan Region or the Taiwan Area but has never administered it. Wartime History Since 1920, developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) into an anchorage and base area to support warships and transports. On December 7, 1941 at the start of the Pacific War, the Japanese Navy invasion force with the Japanese Army "Kanno Detachment" departs Makō bound for Vigan on Luzon in the Philippines.
