Location Koror Island is located in Koror State in the center of Palau. Also spelled "Oreor". At the center of the island is Koror (Koror Town) bordering Koror Harbor. To the northeast connected by a causeway is Babelthuap Island (Babeldaob). To the west connected by a causeway is Arakabesan Island (Ngerekebesang) and nearby is Malakal Island. To the southwest is Urukthapel Island. Prewar Durng the Japanese colonial era, Japanese civilians plus laberors from Korea and farmers from Okinawa were settled on the Koror Island to establish farms and businesses. Wartime History During the Pacific War, Koror Island was not heavily defended by the Japanese military due to the civilian population and infrastructure. Attacked by American aircraft starting in late June 1944 until May 1945 and neutralized. Occupied until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945. American missions against Koror June 23, 1944 - May 5, 1945 Today Today, roughly two-thirds of the nation's population lives on Koror Island.
