Location Lat 13° 25' 9N Long 121° 11' 33E Calapan is located at an elevation of 75' / 22m above sea level on the northeast coast of Mindoro Island in Oriental Mindoro Province in the Philippines. Wartime History In 1942 occupied by the Japanese during their occupation of the Philippines. In January 1945, after the U.S. landing on Mindoro, Japanese defenders concentrate in the Calapan area. On January 24, 1945 liberated by one company from the U.S. Army 24th Division, 21st Infantry Regiment as a part of a deception to that the next American landings might be in the Batangas-Bicol area in hopes of diverting Japanese forces to those areas. Calapan Airfield Located to the east of Calapan still in use today G4M2 Model 12 Betty Crashed October 26, 1944 transporting pilots from 201 Kokutai including Nishizawa Japanese Barge The shipwreck of a Japanese barge is located off Calapan and the Baco Islands is a wartime barge loaded with supplies.
