Location El Fraile Island is located in the South Channel at the entrance to Manila Bay off western Luzon in the Philippines. Named El Fraile by the Spanish meaning The Friar". To the south is the northern coast of Cavite Province on Luzon. To the north is Caballo Island and Corregidor Island and beyond the North Channel. To the west is the South China Sea. Further along the coast to the northeast is Cavite and beyond Manila. Prewar During April 1909 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of a fortification on El Fraile Island. Named Fort Drum in honor of U.S. Army Brigadier General Richard C. Drum who died on October 15, 1909 while the fort was under construction. Wartime History During 1942, Fort Drum was used during the Defense of the Philippines until the surrender of American forces. During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, Fort Drum was never repaired and a small garrisoned was stationed on the island. Japanese and American missions against Fort Drum (El Fraile) January 2, 1942–March 6, 1945 Fort Drum The island was developed into an island fortress by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dubbed "the concrete battleship" to defend the south channel and southern entrance to Manila Harbor.
