| Location Homonhon Island is part of Eastern Samar Province off the southeast tip of Samar Island in the Philippines. Borders Leyte Gulf to the west. To the west is smaller Montoconan Island. Wartime History On October 18, 1944 at 9:00am U.S. Army, Sixth Army, 6th Ranger Battalion, Company B under the command of Captain Arthur D. Simons lands on Homonhon Island as the escorting destroyer and frigate opened fire on the landing beach for for a twelve minute bombardment. The landing craft ran aground 40 yards off the beach and the Rangers waded ashore and found no enemy ashore. At 10:38am the Captain Simons reported their status and the light was operational on the same day and could be seen for ten miles. On October 19, 1944 during minesweeping operations in the approach to Leyte Gulf, destroyer USS Ross (DD-563) was heavily damaged by two sea mines within a half hour roughly eight miles off Homonhon Island. Afterwards, towed by USS Chickasaw (AT-83) to an anchorage between Homonhon Island and Montoconan Island. At 12:04pm targeted by Japanese planes and shrapnel wounds two more crew. On November 11, 1944 in the morning, C-47 Skytrains conduct an air drop over Homonhon Island to support the ground forces escorted by four P-38s Lightnings from "Pinky Special".
