Location Lat 8° 43' 60S Long 148° 18' 0E Soputa is located to the west of the Girua River at the crossroads of the Kokoda-Sananada Trail and Buna-Kokoda Trail inland from the north coast of New Guinea. Also known as "Saputa". Trails lead northward to Sananada along the Soputa-Sananada Trail and northeast towards Buna. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the in the Northern District in the Territory of Papua. Today located in Oro Bay Rural LLG, Ijivitari District in Oro Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History On January 5, 1943, Australian Army infantry and armor reached Soputa. The area was used as a drop zone and staging area for Australian troops during the Battle of Gona. After the conclusion of the campaign, the US Army built a road connecting Soputa to Horanda and Dobodura to the southeast and northward to Cape Killerton and Sanananda. Also known as Soputa Cemetery. At the end of the war, the graves were exhumed and transported to Bomana Cemetery for permanent burial.
