There was little wartime activity on Mailaita Island, but both the Japanese and later Americans established small outpost stations on the island.
During the Guadalcanal campaign, several Japanese and Allied aircraft crashed onto and offshore the island during the war. Following the Guadalcanal Campaign, the American military hired many Malaitan people to work on Guadalcanal helping to build airfields and infrastructure, because they were hard working people. Rivalry between the indigenous people of Guadalcanal and Malaitan people began during the war and continues to the present day.
