Location Sasavele Island is a barrier island off the south coast of New Georgia that borders Roviana Lagoon to the north and Blanche Channel to the south. During World War II, known as or code named "Dume Island". At the northeast edge is Sasavele village bordering the narrow Onaiavisi Channel and beyond Baraulu Island. Beyond to the north is Zanana Beach on the south coast of New Georgia. At the southwest edge is Roviana Island. Offshore to the east is Tambatung Island. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate (BSIP). Today located in Western Province in the Solomon Islands. Wartime History On June 30, 1943 at 2:25am during Operation Toenails the "Western Invasion Force" Task Unit 31.1.1 (TU 31.1.1) Onaiavisi Occupation Unit comprised of USS Talbot (APD-7) and USS Zane (DMS-14) enters Onaiavisi Channel and despite bad weather disembarked the U.S. Army 169th Infantry Regiment A Company and B Company using LCVP (LCVP) to secure Baraulu Island and Sasavele Island respectively. At 2:57am, USS Zane (DMS-14) ran aground offshore and by 5:15am managed to twist free but by 5:30am ran arground again damaging her propellers and remained aground until freed by 2:00pm. Ashore the U.S. Army soldiers secured both islands and allowed artillery to support the main landing July 2, 1943 at Zanana Beach on New Georgia.
