Rex Barber, Lt. Joe Moore and Lt. George Topoll plus a second flight of P-38G "Miss Virginia" 43-2264 pilot Captain Robert Petit, Lt. A. J. Buck, Lt. Jim McLanahan with F4U Corsair pilot 1st Lt. Eben Dale that misidentified the subchaser as a "destroyer" and made repeated strafing runs leaving it burning and listing 15°.

While strafing, P-38G "Daisy 2nd" Nose 125 piloted by 1st Lt. Rex Barber failed to pull up in time and his left outer wing collides with the subchaser's mast damaging his left wing tip but managed to return safely. Afterwards P-38G "Miss Virginia" 43-2264 piloted by Lt. Robert Petit painted a ship silhouette on the nose for the "destroyer" claim.
