Ship History Built by Maizuru Naval Arsenal at Maizuru. Laid down September 3, 1937 as lead destroyer of the Kagerō-class destroyer. Launched September 27, 1938 as Kagerō 陽炎 meaning "Heat Haze" in Japanese. Also spelled Kagero in English sources. Commissioned November 6, 1939 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Wartime History On November 18, 1941 departs from escorted by Saeki with DesDiv 18 with Shiranuhi, Kasumi and Arare bound for Etorofu and escorts the carrier strike force bound for Pearl Harbor and Oahu. On December 17, 1941 Kagero releases depth charges on a false contact. On December 24, 1941 returns to Kure and placed under the command of Commander Terumichi Arimoto. PARTIAL HISTORY On January 21, 1942 Shōkaku, Zuikaku with Chikuma escorted by destroyers Akigumo, Kasumi, Kagero, Shiranuhi to launch separate carrier aircraft raids against targets in New Guinea. On August 11, 1942 departs Yokosuka escorting Jintsu bound for Truk. On August 15, 1942 at 3:00pm enters North Pass at Truk joining five other destroyers and refuels. On August 16, 1942 embarks soldiers fron the Japanese Army, 28th Infantry Regiment "Ichiki Force" and departs Truk with Arashi, Hagikaze, Tanikaze and Hamakaze bound for Guadalcanal. On August 18, 1942 at 8:30pm the destroyers arrive off Taivu Point and overnight land 917 soldiers of the first echeon of Japanese Army, 28th Infantry Regiment "Ichiki Force" under the command of Colonel Kiyonao Ichiki land without opposition at Taivu on eastern Guadalcanal. On August 19, 1942 begins patroling Iron Bottom Sound over the next five days alternating with Kawakaze. On August 23, 1942 Kagero conducts a shore bombardment of Henderson Field on Guadalcanal causing only negligible damage. On August 24, 1942 joins Mutsuki, Isokaze and Yayoi and conducts another shore bombardment of Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. On August 25, 1942 during the Battle of Eastern Solomons at 12:02 strafed by a U.S. plane and suffers slight damage at Lat 6-30'N, Long 159-52'E. Embarks Rear Admiral Raizō Tanaka who transfers his flag from damaged cruiser Jintsu to Kagero then withdraws to Shortland Harbor arriving the next day. On August 28, 1942 the flag of Desron 2 is transfered to Yugiri. On August 29, 1942 departs Shortland Harbor escorting Tsugaru towing damaged Shirakumo. PARTIAL HISTORY On May 7, 1943 departs Buka Island with DesDiv 15 Kuroshio, Oyashio and Kagero and at 11:31am arrives Buin and embarks personnel and cargo departs at 3:20pm as the flagship for an overnight "Tokyo Express" supply run to Vila on Kolombangara Island. Sinking History On May 8, 1943 at 3:12am departs Vila on Kolombangara westward via the Blackett Strait. At 4:06 hit a mine amidships that broke the bulkhead between boiler rooms No. 1 and No. 2 causing flooding and lost power near Fueauei Island. At 9:17am U.S. planes attack and damaged by near misses. At 2:30pm again targeted by U.S. planes and sufferes more near misses that damage the hull and cause flooding and began to settle. At 3:21pm strafed by three planes. At 3:43 fires begain in the wheelhouse under the bridge and spread. At 5:45pm the crew are ordered to abandon ship. At 6:17pm sank at roughly Lat 8° 8' S, Long 156° 55' E roughly 1.2 km off Fueauei Island southward of Ferguson Channel. Lost are 18 killed, 36 wounded including 11 seriously.
