Ship History
Built by Mitsubishi shipyard in Nagasaki. Ordered during fiscal year 1917. Laid down August 15, 1918 as a Minekaze-class destroyer. Launched April 30, 1920 as Yakaze 矢風 meaning "Arrow Wind" or "Wind of an Arrow's Flight" in Japanese. Completed July 19, 1920 and commissioned in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Assigned to the Kure Naval District, Second Fleet.

During 1931, assigned to Destroyer Division 2 (DesDiv 2) under the 1st Air Fleet as part of the escort for Akagi and Hōshō to aid in search and rescue operations for downed aircraft. During 1932, patrols the Yangtze River in China. On March 11, 1939 off Mitajiri accidentally collides with Japanese submarine I-61. By late December 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Masao Takahashi.

Wartime History
On December 8, 1941 at the start of the Pacific War was conducting training in the Seto Inland Sea (Inland Sea).

On March 3, 1942 with Nisshin participates in a search for lost Type A Midget Submarine No. 13 from Chitose.

On April 4, 1942 at Kure begins a conversion into a radio controlled wireless target ship. On May 5, 1942 the conversion was complete. On May 20, 1942 arrives Yokosuka an used as a target ship in Tokyo Bay for aircraft conducting bombing and torpedo training attacks.

On June 27, 1942 placed under the command of Commander Takeyoshi Dobashi. On June 28, 1942 arrived Ominato and continued to be used as a target ship for aircraft conducting bombing and torpedo training attacks.

On July 10, 1942 placed under the command of Lieutenant Commander Shigeo Aono. On July 20, 1942 removed from the Navy list as a destroyer and reclassified as wireless target ship.

On March 6, 1943 at night, severely damaged in an accidental collision with Patrol Boat No. 34 (PB-34) south of Kavieng. Yakaze sustains bow damage and proceeds to Rabaul and undergoes temporary repairs from repair ship Yamabiko Maru.

On July 18, 1945 at Yokosuka damaged by U.S. Navy (USN) carrier planes from Task Force 38 (TF 37) . Afterwards, towed to near Nagaura and entered No. 2 drydock and bottomed and remained in drydck due to lack of repairmen until the end of the Pacific War.

Fate
During 1947 broken up for scrapped.
