Ship History Built by Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Company, Evansville, Indiana. Laid down May 7, 1943 as LST-1 Class Tank Landing Ship. Launched July 17, 1943 as USS LST-245. Commissioned August 22, 1943 in the U.S. Navy (USN) with Lt. Matthew J. McCabe, USNR, in command. Wartime Service Assigned to the South-West Pacific, this LST participated in operations n New Guinea and the Philippines. Between January to February 1944 participated in the landing at Saidor. During February 1944 landed at Cape Gloucester. During March 1944 participated in the combat landing in the Admiralty Islands. On April 22, 1944 landed at Hollandia and remained in the area until May 1944 participated in operations at Toem-Wakde-Sarmi. Next, Biak Island operations during June 1944. During July 1944 the landing at Noemfoor followed by Cape Sansapor operation during July and August 1944. In September 1944 the landing at Morotai. On October 13, 1944 assigned to the Leyte operations. On October 20, 1944 participated in the landing on eastern Leyte and photographed unloading in a row of LSTs with between LST-18 and LST-202. On October 27, 1944 departs the area. On November 5, 1944 returns to Leyte and operates in the vicinity for thirteen days. On January 4, 1945 assigned to Luzon operations. On January 9, 1945 participates in the landings at Lingayen Gulf and remains in the area for the next nine days. During April 1945 participated in the landings on Mindanao. Finally, during June - July 1945 participated in the landings at Balikpapan supporting the Australian Army. Awards For her World War II service, LST-245 earned eight battle stars. Postwar Decommissioned on April 1, 1946. Struck from the Naval Register on May 8, 1946. Transferred to the Maritime Administration on April 15, 1948, for disposal.
