14th Bombardment Squadron (14th BS)

Background
On May 9, 1917 organized as 1st Aviation School Squadron. On August 20, 1917 redesignated 14th Aero Squadron. On July 12, 1918 Squadron A was at Rockwell Field, California. On November 23, 1918 demobilized.
On April 1, 1928 reconstituted and consolidated in the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) at Bolling Field, Washington DC. On March 1, 1935 redesignated 14th Bombardment Squadron. On September 1, 1936 inactivated. On December 22, 1939 activated as 14th Bombardment Group (Medium). On February 1, 1940 activated in the 11th Bombardment Group (11th BG) at Hickam Field. On November 20, 1940 redesignated 14th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy). On February 1, 1940 assigned to the 7th Bombardment Group (7th BG).
On June 20, 1941 became part of the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). During September 1941, a formation of B-17s from the squadron including B-17D 40-3061 were ferried from the United States across the Pacific to the Philippines. The ferry flight included a refueling stop on September 9, 1941 at 7 Mile Drome near Port Moresby in New Guinea and September 10, 1941 at Batchelor Field near Darwin as the first flight of B-17s in Australia before the last leg of the flight to the Philippines. On September 16, 1941 arrives at Clark Field on Luzon.
Wartime History
On December 2, 1941 attached to the 19th Bombardment Group (19th BG). On December 30, 1941 the air echelon moves to Singosari (Malang). Meanwhile, the ground echelon remained in the Philippines attached to the 5th Interceptor Command (Provisional) and served as infantry defending the Bataan Peninsula on Luzon.
On January 1, 1942 the ground echelon moves to Bugo on Mindanao.
On March 1, 1942 the air echelon
ceases operating from Singosari (Malang) and begins withdrawing to Australia. On March 4, 1942 moves to Melbourne. On March 14, 1942 ceases operating from Melbourne with the personnel and and equipment transferred to other units. Meanwhile, the ground echelon remains at Bugo, Mindanano and fights as infantry; the unit is carried
as an active unit but is not manned or equipped after the surrender of the
Philippines in May 1942.
