Mission History On July 6, 1943 took off from Carney Airfield (Bomber 2) piloted by 1st Lt. Don F. Hathaway on a bombing mission against Kahili Airfield on Bougainville. After dropping bombs, the formation left the target area on a south-westerly course, to avoid anti-aircraft defenses in the Shortlands area and flew down the west coast until halfway between Shortland and Treasury Islands then east towards Choiseul. This bomber was attacked by enemy aircraft and turned out of formation. It was observed to continue to follow the formation for a time, and then was lost from sight and never seen to go down. When this bomber failed to return it was officially listed as MIA (MIA). Search The next day, two B-24s from the same squadron were sent out to search for the missing bomber. One searching Malaita Island and the other searching the San Cristobal area. Both reported seeing nothing. Memorials The entire crew was officially declared dead on January 11, 1946. The entire crew earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. All are memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. Barnard also has a memorial marker at Nashville National Cemetery at Section MA, site 6.
