Location San Cristobal Island located in the southeast Solomon Islands surrounded by the Coral Sea. Also known as San Cristóbal or Makira Island. At the southeast corner is Cape Surville. To the northwest is Guadalcanal and Malaita Island. To the southwest is Rennell Island. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate (BSIP). Today located in Makira-Ulawa Province in the Solomon Islands. San Cristobal is the largest island in the province with the provincial capital Kirakira (Kira Kira) and the largest population of 40,419 in 2009.
