Location Strauss Field is located 28 miles to the south of Darwin in the Northern Territory in Australia. Also known as "Strauss Airfield", "28 Mile" or "28 Mile Drone". Borders the Stuart Highway and rail road line. To the north is Noonamah (27 Mile, Noonamah Field Supply Depot / Firdan Depot). Construction Built by the U.S. Army 808th Engineer Battalion as a single runway. Wartime History During World War II, Strauss Field was used by Allied fighters for the defense of the Darwin. Naming Honor During late April 1942, named "Strauss Field" in honor of U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) Captain Allison W. Strauss Killed In Action (KIA) April 27, 1942 piloting P-40E Warhawk. Allied units based at Strauss Field U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) 49th Fighter Group, 8th Fighter Squadron (P-40E Warhawk) Adelaide River May 11 - Sept 25, 1942 Port Moresby Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) 76 Squadron (P-40) October 9, 1942 452 Squadron (Spitfire) February 1, 1943 - early 1944 Sattler Royal Air Force (RAF) 549 Squadron (Spitfire) June 15, 1944 Spitfire Mark Vc A58-22 Pilot Tully crash landed February 21, 1943 afterwards scrapped Today Disused as an airfield since the Pacific War. Today, information displays are located at Strauss Field detailing the wartime history and aircraft based at this location including a memorial plaque on a stone, P-40 cutout with information display "The P-40 - a Hawk at war", Spitfire cutout with information display "Update - a better fighting machine?" and information display "The Spitfire arrive - Postwar disposal and a new life? - Strauss - an international link".
