Location Lat 0° 53' 0" S Long 131° 12' 0" E Sorong Seaplane Base was located off Sorong on the Vogelkop Peninsula at the northwestern tip of New Guinea. Also known as Doom Seaplane Base for nearby Doom Island (Dom Island). Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in Sorong Regency in West Papua Province of Indonesia. Construction Built prewar by the Dutch as a seaplane base with moorings off Doom Island (Dom Island). Wartime History On December 28, 1941 bombed by Japanese aircraft, killing three and wounding six on the ground. During 1942 occupied by the Japanese as they occupied Dutch New Guinea until the end of the Pacific War. American missions against Sorong June 10, 1943–September 24, 1944 Japanese units based at Sorong 23rd Naval Flotilla (A6M2-N Rufe) withdrawn to Amboina Seaplane Base 153 Kokutai, 311 Hikotai (A6M3-5 Zeros) was one time based at Sorong References Index to Air Bases - Research Report No. 85, I.G.
