| Location Pilar Airfield was located southwest of Pilar on the Bataan Peninsula in Bataan Province on Luzon in the Philippines. Also known as Pilar Field. Wartime History Used by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) by the Far East Air Force (FEAF) during the defense of the Philippines between December 1941 until January 1942. On January 7, 1942 during the night, the 17th Pursuit Squadron personnel evacuated Pilar and withdrew to the south as the front line was only eight miles to the north. On January 8, 1942 at 10:35am three P-40s piloted by John Posten, Bill Rowe, and Wilson Grover took off from Pilar Airfield to perform a reconnaissance over the Cabanatuan to Tarlac area then to Subic Bay and returned via San Fernando where Posten and Rowe strafed a troop concentration and a building. This was the last mission flown from Pilar Airfield. Returning, three Ann dive bombers were attacking Pilar Airfield and damaged the runway. Although low on ammunition, the three P-40s engaged them without result but another group of Anns approaching broke off their attack. Since the runway was damaged, the three P-40s departed southward and landed at Bataan Airfield at 12:35pm. Today Disused since the Pacific War.
