US: In preliminary report, Joint War Plans Committee recommends Marshalls be invaded near end of October and General Douglas MacArthur and Admiral William F. Halsey conduct holding actions until operations in the Marshalls are concluded. This arouses unfavorable reaction in some quarters and the suggestion is soon rejected.
AMERICAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS (Eleventh Air Force)
Seven B-24's, 8 B-25's, 12 P-40's, and 2 F-5A's fly
weather reconnaissance, attack, and photo missions to Kiska and Little Kiska. Targets include gun batteries, Kiska Airfield runway, North Head and
Main Camp.
CHINA (Fourteenth Air Force)
In China, 9 P-40's on armed reconnaissance strafe 10 barges and a
gunboat at Chienli; 1 barge is set aflame. Ten P-40's intercept about 25
airplanes over Hengyang; one enemy bomber is shot down.
SOUTH PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS (Thirteenth Air Force)
P-38's and Navy fighters claim four aircraft downed
off the northern tip of Malaita Island. B-17's and B-24's pound Kahili Airfield twice during the day.
SOUTHWEST PACIFIC THEATER OF OPERATIONS (Fifth Air Force)
More than 20 B-17's and B-24's pound airfields in the Rabaul area. A single B-24 bomb Sorong and shipping at Kokas.
USN: USS PC-487 is damaged after intentionally ramming Japanese submarine I-24 that sinks 40 miles north-northeast of Shemya at Lat 53°16'N Long 174°24'E.
USS Flying Fish (SS-229) unsuccessfully attacks Japanese cargo vessel Fujikawa Maru, 24°55'N, 145°36'E.
USS S-30 (SS-135) sinks Japanese merchant cargo ship Jimbu Maru, 50°23'N, 155°36'E.
USS Tinosa (SS-283) damages Japanese oiler Iro 30 miles off Fuka Island, Kyushu, 31°14'N, 132°44'E. Although damaged in return by depth charges during enemy counterattacks, the submarine remains on patrol.
USS Trigger (SS-237) damages Japanese carrier Hiyō 18 miles off Irozaki, 34°13'N, 139°50'E.
Japanese river gunboat Atami is damaged by Chinese aircraft near Tung Ting Lake, China.
