Location Lat 2° 13' 0S Long 146° 58' 60E Green Island Lagoon is located at the center of Green Island Atoll, surrounded by Sau Island (Sale), Pinipel Island, Nissan Island (Green Island), Belil Island, Sirot Island, Barahun Island. At the center of the lagoon is Hon Island. To the northwest is Sau Island (Sale) and Pinipel Island. Also known as Nissan Lagoon. Today, part of Nissan Rural Local Level Government (Nissan Rural LLG), North Bougainville District, Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Bougainville Province), Papua New Guinea (PNG). There are three passages into Green Island Lagoon. North Channel is located between Belil Island and Sirot Island. Middle Channel is located between Barahun Island. South Channel is the widest between Barahun Island and Nissan Island (Green Island). World War II Pacific Theatre History During January 1942, Green Island Lagoon was briefly used by Japanese Navy H6K Mavis flying boats and F1M2 Pete floatplanes used Green Island lagoon as a seaplane operating area. The lagoon area was used as a take off and landing area. Likely, there were no base facilities at this location. After the Japanese invasion of Rabaul, the seaplanes were transfered to Simpson Harbor at Rabaul. It is unclear if any Japanese seaplanes or flying boats used this location afterwards.
