Location Lat 16° 17' 54N Long 121° 2' 27E Aritao is located at an elevation of 1,669' / 508m along Route 5 in Nueva Vizcaya Province in central-northern Luzon in the Philippines. Connected by Route 5 to the southwest is Santa Fe and to the northeast is Bambang. To the west is Pingkian. Wartime History During the Japanese occupation of Luzon, the Japanese Army built the Baguio-Aritao supply road that ended at Aritao. During the Battle of Villa Verde Trail, Aritao was part of the Japanese supply route to support the defenders until Santa Fe was captured on May 26, 1945. On June 1, 1945 the remainder of the Japanese Army 14th Area Army including the 2nd Tank Regiment and 10th Tank Regiment dug in at Aritao. The Japanese defenders were roughly 250 soldiers deployed along Route 5 south of Aritao with roughly ten light tanks supported by roughly ten 47mm guns and 75mm guns. On June 4, 1945 the U.S. Army 37th Infantry Division, 129th Infantry Regiment attacks Aritao supported by M4 Shermans from 775th Tank Battalion. During the assault, the two M4 tanks and two anti-tank guns were lost. The attack is supported by A-20s and fighter-bombers that target defensive positions at Aritao. The defending Japanese were defeated with a Type 1 Ho-Ni 75mm Self Propelled Gun captured intact. On June 5, 1945 in the morning, the 129th Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion enters Aritao then advanced northeast to Bambang with the 145th Inf also in the Aritao area.
